Diego Maradona shrines can be found all over Naples, Italy. Despite being a native Argentianian and former player for Barcelona, Maradona’s leadership of S.S.C Napoli’s win in the ‘86-‘87 Serie A Italian Championships effectively transformed him into a deity. Many consider him to be the greatest football player of all time.
I’m fascinated by these displays of vernacular veneration. In a city steeped in Catholic tradition and religious fervor, its endlessly interesting to witness those tendencies seamlessly transfer from worship for a heavenly god, to worship for a god of the football pitch.
